One tip styling tricks | Room by room

Whether you’re wanting to make your mark on a new home or perhaps craving a new look, chances are you’re nervous about the cost involved. Even if the finances aren’t going to stretch very far, you can still make a difference with some low-spend styling tricks. Today I’ve picked out one for each room that will deliver maximum impact.
LIVING ROOM
One of the easiest and most effective ways of revamping a living room is with new sofa cushions. When it comes to colour, take your cue from a favourite item in the room such as an artwork or rug and don’t be afraid to combine different patterns and graphics. I’m a big fan of mixing black and white with a touch of colour and then layering in some texture by way of wool or sheepskin. The cushions on offer at Country Road and Citta Design perfectly fit the bill right now.

KITCHEN
When looking at making even cosmetic changes to the kitchen, there are lots of factors that come in to play such as size, layout and cabinetry. Regardless of these, the bench space is always going to be one of the most important areas, especially in terms of aesthetics and functionality. To make the most of your bench space, de-clutter by discarding or storing away anything that you do not use regularly. Then set about creating what I like to refer to as ‘kitchen corners’. Do this by grouping everyday items such as grinders, herbs, oils, chopping boards and utensils. Use a tray, basket or canister for storage and your kitchen will immediately look more tidy, stylish and pulled together. Other popular corners could be your coffee machine and espresso cups, or a fruit basket and vase of fresh flowers. To further maximise bench space, especially if you’re lacking storage, install a wall-mounted knife rack or some simple shelves. You can easily replicate the ones below with Brackets from Father Rabbit and shelves from Bunnings.

BATHROOM
You may not be able to re-tile or replace the bathtub, but you can instantly revive a tired-looking bathroom with some new towels. Bold, bright designs like those from Aura Home will really pack a punch. If it’s more of a calm oasis you want to create, I recommend choosing beautiful Turkish towels such as those from Ottoloom and Izzy and Jean Co.

BEDROOM
It may sound obvious, but changing your bedding will instantly give your bedroom a fresh new look, and with so many gorgeous options right now the hardest part will be deciding which to buy. To inject some vibrancy and colour, you can’t go past the unique designs of Kip & Co and the bold yet timeless designs of Aura. NZ-made brand Thread Design consistently produce high quality seasonal ranges featuring stunning colour combinations and designs to mix and match. For those on a budget, Society6 have just introduced duvet covers to their extensive range of artist-designed products. A personal favourite and one that more and more New Zealanders are discovering thanks to a growing number of local suppliers is linen bedding. Not only does it drape beautifully with just the right amount of crinkle, it feels amazing against your skin and softens with every wash. Right now I’m loving the muted, earthy colours on offer at Nest, Tessuti and Cultiver.
