Infuse some “wow” into your windows

The task of designing and specifying your own window furnishings can be overwhelming. To assist you with the process, I’m going to show you simple ways of infusing some wow into your windows, without the stress. If you’re keen to go down the DIY path, there are plenty of handy tips and videos to be found on the web, but to get the best results possible, I recommend enlisting professional help.

Window furnishings come in a variety of styles and materials to help you achieve the look you want and the coverage you need. With so many options, choosing the right one can be challenging. Before deciding, first consider the following:

THE STYLE OF YOUR HOME.

Be savvy and play to the strengths of each window. That way they will become a focal point of the room. For example, if your windows provide a strong architectural element, sheer fabric will reduce the effect of window treatments allowing flow to the outside environment. Whilst when used in bedroom, sheer fabric can create a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

The use of lined drapes brings the focus back into the room and effectively cuts the outside world out when drawn.

THE LOOK YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE.

As a lover of clean lines and Scandi-style, I chose white blinds to match our walls. Black wooden venetians are also in the plans for the kitchen and entrance, as these will tie in well with our black joinery. For curtains, I love neutral colours, and generous fabric that has a textural element. If your style is more eclectic or you want something vibrant, colour or pattern will certainly add drama to your room.

BUDGET.

Always work within your budget, even if it means installing window furnishings gradually. I recommend starting with the bedrooms or areas you spend the most time in. Save up and then start on the next room.

CURTAINS

With so many fabric choices on offer, I recommend playing around with length and texture as mentioned above. Where added insulation and soundproofing is required, look at two-fabric combinations. If you have high windows I recommend using a little more fabric and starting your curtains from the ceilings. This will add height and elegance to the room. And remember, never ever do a short curtain! Right now I’m loving soft sheers and natural linens. The two-toned curtains above are also amazing.

SHUTTERS

Wooden shutters provide a stylish alternative to more conventional blinds and are also a very practical window furnishing option. They look stunning in contemporary minimalist style homes or town houses, beautiful on classic villas and character homes, and can transform simply designed houses. Allowing light and air in while maintaining privacy, they are also good in situations where curtains might not fare so well, such as bathroom windows. They do however let in a lot of light, so if you are wanting to soften the brightness, a translucent roller blind would be better. BLINDS

The types of blinds commonly used in interiors are Venetian blinds, Roller blinds and Roman blinds. Always run blinds and curtains at the same height, unless there are completely different ceiling and structural elements within one room.

VENETIAN BLINDS

Made from aluminium or timber, venetians offer you precise control of light intensity and direction with the quick twist of a wand. In just seconds you can effortlessly control light, ventilation and privacy while adding style and value to your home.

ROLLER BLINDS

A simple and inexpensive way to cover your windows, roller blinds are both practical and elegant. Perfect for any room, choose from a range of fabric options from sheer to full block out. You can also get sunscreen roller blinds with UV filters. Easy to operate, roller blinds are often used in conjunction with curtains. Plain, white blinds moderate the heat and glare, while the sheer curtain adds colour and greater privacy when drawn.

ROMAN BLINDS

Roman blinds are constructed from panels of fabric that create folds when the blind is drawn upwards. Providing functionality and tailored clean style, Roman blinds are a streamlined solution for your window. They are suitable for most rooms in your home and are available in a variety of styles to suit your interior.
