Interior trends for 2015

Even though I believe in following your heart rather than trends, it’s important to keep up to date with what’s current. My interior predictions for the year ahead are centred around natural materials, textural elements and beautiful colour palettes, all of which I believe are going to be big for 2015. Whether you choose to embrace one or all, remember to only buy what you love. After all, it is your home, and you should be surrounded by the things that make you happy!
INDOOR PLANTS
A trend that was big in the 70s, decorating with plants has become popular again in recent years. In 2013 the Fiddle Leaf Fig became the must-have plant, with its popularity continuing to rise last year. Lately we’ve been seeing a lot tropical plants, with the Monstera in particular taking centre stage. Dark green varieties, interesting shapes, hanging plants and easy-care cacti will also be big this year. Understandably, the trend also brings with it new ideas for displaying plants in the home, with a favourite being the modern reinvention of the traditional plant stand. I love my Trestle Union Pot Plant Stand which you can purchase here. The Botanical Wares studio Ivy Muse also have a great selection. For further inspiration and fresh ideas, take a look here.

TINTED GLASS
Tinted glass is also making a come-back, with smoky tones coming through in new season collections from Scandinavia. Seen in glassware, candleholders and lights these products have a lovely warmth and retro feel. Locally, I love the Brae Tumblers from Nest.

MARBLE, METALLICS AND MIRRORS
There are no signs of the marble and metallic trends slowing down for 2015. Marble will continue to be a popular choice for bathroom and kitchen finishes. For durability I recommend using engineered stone which is available in different marble-look varieties. Alternatively add marble touches to your home with homewares and accessories. Check out the Marble basics range from LET LIV and Mildred & Co. Metallics also add warmth and texture. I’m still loving the look of copper or bronze paired with monochrome and touches and natural greenery. When it comes to decorative design elements, look no further than the mirror. One of my favourite Danish design houses Menu features copper tones, round shapes and marble and brass accents in their covetable mirror line-up for 2015.

COLOUR FORECASTS
Last year I predicted that colours would be inspired by nature, with earthy greys, dusky pinks and muted shades of blue and green. These palettes will continue this year, but we’ll also see blues and greens that are bolder and textural, as shown here, here and here. For those who prefer the softer, pastel look, do not fear because there will be plenty of pretty duck-egg blue, minty green and rose pink to choose from, as shown in the images below. The Dulux Colour Forecast for 2015 includes four stunning colour ranges which are sure to inspire. Drawing inspiration from global creative industries, such as art, fashion and interior design, their incredible vision which you can read about here, came to life through a collaboration with six design experts.

NATURAL SELECTION
While mass-produced home goods are easy to come by, they lack the appeal of hand-crafted pieces. Often these products are the result of generations of tradition, a person’s unique skill or conviction to their creative vision. The desire to source pieces that tell a story and give your home soul will continue to grow this year. Homewares that have been made from environmentally friendly materials free of harmful substances will also lead the way. When it comes to soft furnishings and bedding, the trend for natural linens and textiles will continue to rise, while ceramics will be all about unique designs, organic shapes, and interesting textures. For bedding, I can’t go past my linen sheets from Cultiver and Nest. Indie Home Collective have a vast collection of natural homewares including the beautiful Wonki Ware dinnerware below.
