Budget-friendly styling tips with three products

When it comes to interior styling, I believe in buying less, but choosing well. This means only buying the things you love, that you can envisage having for a long time. By all means splurge on an investment piece every now and then, but be clever about mixing in affordable pieces and upcycling existing ones. That way you’ll not only stay within budget, you’ll create a home with personality and soul.

We all have a natural tendency to be more impulsive with cheaper finds, but try to be considered in your approach, regardless of the price tag. Rather than snapping up a bargain just for the sake of it, choose pieces that fit with the overall look of your home and have a purpose. To demonstrate, I’ve picked out three affordable products, two of which I have in my own home.

MOCKA JIMMY STAND

The Mocka Jimmy Stand is a stylish and affordable storage solution designed for keeping everyday items organised in the home. Wanting to gain a bit more order in my office, I discovered it when hunting for a piece of low-level furniture that would provide a place for magazines and other items that often end up sitting on the floor below my Stendig Calendar. I got the idea from the Ikea Trendig Cart, which is such a steal that even the additional cost of shipping to NZ didn’t deter me. After learning that it had sold out worldwide, I was happy to discover the Jimmy Stand, which is not only a great alternative, it retails at just $49.95. In addition to providing storage, the Jimmy Stand is in fitting with my Scandinavian style home, with a simple, functional design and clean lines. What I love most is its versatility. Transitioning easily from room to room, as you can see below it also looks right at home in my office, our hallway and a corner of the living room. Also designed to provide extra storage in the bathroom, you can’t go wrong!

HEXE SHADOW BOXES

We all own old pieces of furniture or decorative items that we think have seen their best days, but a little bit of elbow grease, the right preparation and a coat of paint can give an outdated piece a new lease of life.

A great way of providing extra storage in any room of the home, there are many simple wall-mounted shelving options around these days. These cheap and chic Hexe shadow boxes which I bought for my son’s room from Typo are perfect for housing his little toys. Recently he moved into a big-boy bed which called for a mini room-makeover. Deciding to paint them the same colour as the walls, the crisp white finish has added a fresh touch, and makes his brightly coloured accessories pop! Here are the before and after photos.

INDUSTRIAL CLOTHING RACK

Many older homes are limited in terms of wardrobe space. Customised, built-in options can be expensive, while stylish free-standing closets are hard to find. Industrial-style clothing racks provide a great alternative. Not only practical, they are becoming increasingly popular as a design element in the bedroom, especially in the beautiful, minimalist Scandinavian homes that appeal to so many of us.

Simple, strong and designed to last a lifetime, I recommend the very well-priced Rutherford Industrial Clothing Rack by New Zealand designers George & Willy.
